We’re seeing so many political ads suggesting that prices will be higher if Democrats are elected. We wanted to add our 2 cents - because, good grief, do we ever know about “adding 2 cents” now.
Based on what we’ve seen the last two years, HERE is what you can expect if the GOP power remains unchecked in our government after these midterms:
Continued tariffs. Trump has shown he has no intention of removing or decreasing import tariffs. When the IEEPA tariffs were ruled illegal by the Supreme Court in February of 2026, he installed the Trade Act of 1974 tariffs. When the Trade Act of 1974 tariffs expired, he re-applied them using a different section. He will continue to force bulb suppliers to collect tariffs on these goods if he’s allowed to go unchecked.
Increasing overseas shipping costs. The costs of shipping bulbs overseas has been adversely affected by increasing container shipment costs due to skyrocketing diesel fuel prices from Trump’s invasion of Iran and security problems for the container shipping companies. Their fleets have been marooned, bombed, and suffered substantial losses and insurance hikes in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
Increasing domestic shipping costs. As fuel prices increase from the invasion of Iran, so do the costs related to shipping to you. Domestic carrier costs (FedEx and UPS) and LTL (less than a truck load) freight costs have all gone up as a reflection of diesel fuel hikes.
Increasing packaging costs. Our domestically-produced boxes and tape (packaging supplies) are also increasing due to higher costs of production for our suppliers.
Increasing warehouse utility costs. Our own heating fuel and electricity are increasing. Did you know that much of the power in northern New York comes from Canada? That’s a big problem for us because of this administration’s trade war with Canada.
Increasingly property taxes. Our warehouse’s property taxes are going up, too. In addition to electricity. Many of the northern states purchase road salt from Canada. Our rural town’s budget is facing a deficit of $300,000 due to road salt import tariffs and high diesel fuel prices anticipated this winter. The town board has determined it will raise property taxes to cover the deficit.
Increasing labor costs. As our own team members face extra economic burdens from the economy, we seek to support them with wages that protect their families, as best we can. These are extra costs that become part of our bottom line.
Stagnant growth in our infrastructure. While we’d love to make some significant improvements to assist in the efficiency and scale of our company- we simply can’t do that easily under this administration. These kinds of changes and updates can help us lower your costs.
There are many issues facing voters at the polls for this midterm election. Economic/financial issues are one small piece. We hope you’ll vote for change for whatever the reasons are that motivate you.
